Herriman Mustangs at American Fork Cavemen
American Fork, UT
September 8, 2017
The American Fork Cavemen unleashed their vaunted passing attack Friday night and cruised to an easy 35-14 victory over the visiting Herriman Mustangs.
The Cavemen struck first when Herriman mishandled a punt deep in their own territory. The Cavemen took over on the Herriman 27-yard line and quickly capitalized as Senior Quarterback Bronson Barron with great protection from his line hit Chase Roberts over the middle for a 24-yard touchdown to go up 7-0.
Both teams stalled on subsequent possessions and took turns punting the ball. The Mustangs evened the score at 7-7 when they broke through the right side of the Cavemen line to block a punt and scooped it up for a touchdown with 1:45 left in the half.
Barron promptly lead his team down field into Mustang territory with a couple of quick tosses to Chase Roberts who picked up additional yards with some nifty running. The drive was capped when Senior receiver Tyler Traveler found a seam in the middle of the Mustang defense and hauled in a perfect pass from Barron to take the lead at 14-7 with 42 seconds left in the half.
Disaster struck on the ensuing kickoff when Herriman coughed up the ball deep in their own territory and AF pounced on the ball at the 28-yard line. After a holding call moved the ball back to the 44-yard line Barron found chase Roberts streaking between two defenders and hit him with a perfect spiral to take a 21-7 lead into the half.
Sophomore Devin Downing opened the second half with a nifty 20-yard kick return that gave the Cavemen the ball at their own 35. The Cavemen again began to move the ball effectively on the Herriman defense and converted a key fourth down play to keep the drive alive. Barron found his favorite target, Chase Roberts breaking over the middle again and hit him for a 35-yard touchdown that gave the Cavemen a commanding 28-7 lead.
Herriman kept pounding away on the ground with their massive front line but the AF defense proved to be stout as the Mustangs struggled to sustain a drive. Forced to punt again the Cavemen took over on the Herriman 40-yard line and Bronson Barron this time found Ferrell Dean for a 20-yard TD reception in heavy traffic to put the game out of reach at 35-7.
Late in the game Herriman was able to mount a drive assisted by two Cavemen face mask penalties and eventually found the end zone on a 7-yard TD pass from Blake Freeland to Carter Pearce with under four minutes to play.
The skill of the AF passing attack mixed with hard and effective running by Scotty Buhler and Josh Wernli were too much for the Mustang defense to handle. The Mustangs never could mount a serious threat with their running game and failed to connect through the air as the Mustang punter got plenty of action on the night.
